‘Flotilla’ inspires pupils to become climate aware
Pupils welcomed experts from climate technology and advisory business, Flotilla, to talk about climate change as part of the school’s ‘Apollo Talk’ series.
Climate change and environmental issues are already firmly on the Highfield Prep School agenda, having recently been awarded the coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag which recognises its commitment to sustainability and reducing its impact on the environment. Climate technology group Flotilla were invited to speak to pupils to help build on their knowledge and understanding of climate change issues and how they can make a difference.
The school’s ‘Apollo Talk’ series invites experts to present to pupils on a variety of important subjects each term. Flotilla’s team talked to pupils about what climate change is, how it affects people and the planet and talked to pupils about how they can reduce their carbon footprint, both at school and at home.
James Savile, Head of Highfield Prep School, said the pupils took the issue of climate change very seriously and it was very high on the school’s daily agenda.
“The pupils understand the weight of responsibility that their generation carries and the importance of looking after the planet. They are very well informed about the challenges that lie ahead and the Apollo Talk really sparked their interest and fermented their resolve to tackle climate change and understand how their everyday actions can have an impact on the world around them. It was a great talk, really informative and well presented, and it’s one of many such talks that take place in school each term,”
he said.
Francesca Woodward from Flotilla, who presented to the children, said
“It’s so important that we inspire and engage young people as well as adults if we are going to tackle climate change and really make a difference. Young people have powerful voices and can make big things happen – they are the next generation of green leaders. It was fantastic to speak to the children at Highfield, to listen to what they already know about climate change and discuss ideas for how we can all work together towards a brighter, better future.”
Flotilla helps businesses and organisations with the transition to a low carbon economy, combining technology, science-based intellect and expertise to equip businesses with end-to-end solutions that enable them to develop, execute and measure a net zero strategy, providing ongoing support for the entire journey. The business is committed to engaging with more schools and pledges to help over 30,000 children and young people to become climate aware by 2026.
